Flutterwave announced the close of its Series E financing, which values the African payments infrastructure leader at $3.2 billion. The round brings a strategic equity investment from Ripple, the blockchain-based fintech that supplies enterprise-grade digital asset solutions. While the exact size of Ripple’s stake was not disclosed, Flutterwave confirmed that it has now raised more than $500 million across all funding rounds. The capital will accelerate a multi-year roadmap that places stablecoins at the core of the company’s cross-border settlement stack, positioning the firm to deliver faster, lower cost payments across the continent’s 35 markets.
The partnership weaves Ripple’s RLUSD stablecoin, the XRP Ledger (XRPL), and Ripple Payments into Flutterwave’s existing network of local cards, mobile wallets, and bank transfers. By embedding digital asset liquidity directly into its API driven platform, Flutterwave aims to eliminate the multi-day delays and inflated FX margins that have long hampered African commerce.
Series E Valuation and Ripple Stake
Flutterwave’s Series E round caps the company’s valuation at $3.2 billion, a milestone that reflects deep institutional confidence in its financial fundamentals. Ripple’s participation marks the first equity commitment from the blockchain firm to an African payments platform. The round pushes Flutterwave’s total capital raised past $500 million, though neither party disclosed the precise amount contributed by Ripple.
Stablecoin-First Architecture
Building on earlier collaborations, including a 2025 stablecoin solution with Polygon Labs and the acquisition of African banking startup Mono, Flutterwave is moving toward a “stablecoin-first” payment architecture. The integration of Ripple’s RLUSD positions stablecoins as the primary settlement asset for high-volume channels, allowing merchants to bypass legacy frictions and achieve predictable pricing and real-time settlement.
Strategic Pillars of the Ripple Partnership
The collaboration rests on three concrete pillars:
- RLUSD Embedding – RLUSD will be natively supported across Flutterwave’s payment rails and the Send App remittance corridor.
- XRPL Clearing – Leveraging the XRP Ledger delivers sub-second transaction finality, dramatically accelerating cross-border clearing.
- Unified API – A single API bridges Flutterwave’s domestic network with Ripple Payments, creating a seamless conduit between fiat and digital-asset ecosystems.
“Flutterwave has built one of the most advanced payments networks in Africa, and as its infrastructure evolves, stablecoins are becoming central to that story,” said Reece Merrick, Managing Director, MEA at Ripple.
Impact on African Commerce
With a footprint in 35 African countries, Flutterwave processes over a billion transactions worth tens of billions of dollars and handles more than 20 million API calls per day. The Ripple integration is expected to deliver guaranteed liquidity, predictable pricing, and real-time settlement for SMEs and global enterprises alike. As co-founder and CEO Olugbenga “GB” Agboola put it, the deal is “a catalyst for Nigerian and African sovereignty in the digital financial age,” enabling a payment superhighway that connects African commerce directly to the global economy.
Why Zillionize Invested
Zillionize backs founders who are redefining traditional business. When Zillionize invested in Flutterwave in 2016, their belief that digital-asset liquidity would become a cornerstone in Africa’s next wave of economic growth was visionary. Zillionize is proud that Flutterwave has become a top-ranking company in their list of unicorn investments.
